What qualifications do I need to teach in Queensland?

Before you can teach in Queensland, you’ll need to obtain these two essentials:

There are a wide range of qualifications available that can lead you towards eligibility for teacher registration. These programs will give you the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to start your career. These programs are often referred to as preservice or initial teacher education (ITE) programs.

ITE programs include:

  • four-year undergraduate degrees, for example a Bachelor of Education.
  • dual or combined degree programs, where two degrees including an education degree, are completed at the same time, for example a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education.
  • postgraduate degrees, for example a Master of Teaching, or Master of Education for people who have already completed an academic degree in a non-education area such as a Bachelor of Science.

The QCT provide a list of approved initial teacher education programs on their website. You can apply for your preferred qualification through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).
