PublishingPageContent

The Professional Experience Innovation (PEI) Grants were established to foster partnerships between Initial Teacher Education (ITE) providers and Queensland state schools, enabling them to pilot innovative and mutually beneficial initiatives with a focus on professional experience placements and school-based experiences for preservice teachers in 2024.

The PEI Grants have been designed to support ITE providers and their partnering schools to pilot new programs or enhance existing initiatives, with a focus on ensuring graduates are job-ready for Queensland state schools.

The new grants have provided shortlisted partnerships with access to funding of up to $50,000 to support the co-design and delivery of new and enhanced initiatives, resources and activities to support the preparation and retention of beginning teachers for state schools across Queensland.

Teaching in and with community

ITE partner: James Cook University

Queensland state school partners: Hughenden State School, Julia Creek State School, Cloncurry State School, Mount Isa State Schools

Program/initiative summary:
A 1-week immersive experience for James Cook University preservice teachers who will receive exposure to the high-quality teaching, learning and mentoring practices available to teachers in state schools across rural Queensland. Aimed at preservice teachers in their first year of study, encouraging them to undertake placements in rural and remote and high priority locations. Also aimed at preservice teachers in their final phase of study to begin teaching in rural and remote Queensland state school contexts.

Opening opportunities for rural, remote and regional experience

ITE partner: Griffith University

Queensland state school partners: Malanda State High School, Tully State High School, Pimlico State High School

Program/initiative summary:
The objective of this program is to raise the status of regional, rural and remote (RRR) teaching within second year preservice teachers (PSTs) with the intent of evoking interest in a RRR teaching opportunity. The project is aimed at cohorts who might not have considered this opportunity due to their personal circumstances (for example, single parent or financial hardship). The project objectives will be achieved by fostering opportunities for PSTs to experience first-hand, in informal and non-evaluative settings, what life as a teacher in RRR contexts can offer in relation to social, economic, and professional benefits.

The Griffith University / Benowa State School Special Education Excellence Program

ITE partner: Griffith University

Queensland state school partner: Benowa State School

Program/initiative summary:
The program is a new initiative designed to further develop the preparedness of preservice teachers to meet the needs of increasingly more diverse classrooms, in the high priority area of special education and inclusiveness. The aim is to empower graduates by offering them an opportunity to gain additional in-school and in-classroom experience in Queensland state schools. Funding will be used to support targeted training and learning opportunities in the area of special needs education.

Coast to country: Immersing quality preservice teachers in regional rural and remote schools

ITE partner: University of the Sunshine Coast

Queensland state school partners: Townsville State High School, Charters Towers, Hughenden State School, Winton State School

Program/initiative summary:
The program will introduce preservice teachers (PSTs) to regional, rural and remote (RRR) contexts. The University of the Sunshine Coast has existing data that proves that many preservice teachers who attend the Coast to Country take up RRR professional experience and employment. However, the program in its current form is limited by a modest budget. The aim is to scale the program so that more PSTs can experience teaching and living in RRR locations.

Empowering pre-service teachers through real-time coaching, digitally enhanced feedback and artificial intelligence

ITE partner: The University of Queensland

Queensland state school partners: Mansfield State High School, The Gap State High School, Ironside State School, Indooroopilly State School, Emerald State High School

Program/initiative summary:
This program seeks to improve the skill acquisition and self-efficacy of pre-service teachers using a multi-faceted technology-based approach, drawing on three recent digital advances in preservice teacher education – Real-Time Coaching, the IRISConnect Platform and Artificial Intelligence – to enhance the practicum experience. The project builds on existing partnerships between the University of Queensland, IRISConnect, and Motorola.

Preparing beginning teachers for the classroom using an observable classroom

ITE partner: The University of Queensland

Queensland state school partner: Brisbane South State Secondary College

Program/initiative summary:
This partnership will allow for preservice and in-service teachers to develop their in-school and in-class experiences beyond their professional practicums to allow for teaching to occur within Brisbane South State Secondary College’s classroom observation lab. This program would allow for a deeper understanding and experience of mentoring and targeted opportunities to pay attention to what preservice teachers notice in classroom observations versus what an experienced teacher may notice.
