Education is a constantly changing field and it is important that you have the latest information about new legislation, policies and teaching practices. Even if you have not taught in a classroom in a while, it’s important that your knowledge of current practices and expectations is up to date. This also helps to build your capability and confidence, and ensure you are classroom ready for teaching in Queensland state schools.

If you are seeking employment as teacher in a Queensland state school, including casual or relief teaching, you should submit an application for teacher employment through our online applicant portal.

As a teacher in any Queensland school, you must be registered with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

When renewing your teacher registration so you can return to teaching, the QCT may apply a Returning to Teaching (RTT) condition on your registration, if you do not meet the recency of practice requirements.

If you have not taught more than 100 days in the previous five years, you will have the Returning to Teaching (RTT) condition applied to your teacher registration. This means that you will need to complete RTT professional development within 12 months of your first day back at teaching.

The RTT condition will not affect your ability to seek employment and you can apply for roles in Queensland schools.

 Returning to Teaching requirements

The RTT requirements include ensuring that teachers returning to the classroom are familiar with current legislation and teaching practices, and must be completed within 12 months of returning to teaching.

The condition must be met on recommencing teaching, including casual and temporary/contract employment by undertaking a minimum of 20 hours of relevant professional development. These hours can also contribute to a teacher’s Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements.

This professional development will include mandatory requirements and important topics such as such as behaviour management, record keeping and the Australian Curriculum.

To ensure flexibility for individual teachers and their teaching context, there are a couple of ways you can meet requirements of the RTT condition associated with your registration. Details of the Returning to Teaching pathways are available on the QCT website. If you are teaching in Queensland state schools, options include:

  • undertaking the online modules and support offered by the QCT
  • working with your school principal, to ensure you can access appropriate professional development and support, including building your knowledge in current teaching practices and school processes.

To access the QCT’s free mandatory training modules login to MyQCT.

Once you have met the requirements of the RTT condition, you can apply to have the condition reviewed by the QCT. Read more about the Review of a Returning to Teaching condition.
