About the Department of Education
Our students
Queensland state schools provide education ensuring the success of every student in:
- Kindergarten
- Prep to Year 10
- Years 11 and 12.
Selected schools in rural, remote and discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, or other selected communities where there are barriers to accessing kindergarten, also deliver kindergarten through the
State Delivered Kindergarten program.
Our curriculum
Queensland schools implement all 8 learning areas of the Australian Curriculum in Prep to Year 10. The
Australian Curriculum consists of 8 learning areas, 7 general capabilities and 3 cross-curriculum priorities.
In Years 11 and 12, Queensland schools are required to select curriculum to be implemented from a range of subject options available through the
Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). The QCAA senior syllabuses build on the expectations of the Prep to Year 10 Australian Curriculum.
The
K–12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework specifies the curriculum, assessment and reporting requirements for all Queensland state school principals and staff delivering the curriculum from Prep to Year 12.
Our school year
The Queensland school year usually runs from late January to mid-December for 40 school weeks each year, with the rare exception of a 41-week year.
The school year is divided into 2 semesters, with 2 terms in each semester and vacation breaks for Easter, winter, spring and summer. View the
Queensland state school holidays and term dates for more information.
Our inclusive school culture
We are committed to providing and practicing an inclusive culture. Our
We All Belong workforce diversity and inclusion framework (PDF, 3.9MB) outlines our approach so we can grow together as an organisation and team, valuing and embracing the different skills, knowledge and experiences we each bring to work.
Additionally, we foster inclusion and diversity by embracing it across our entire eco-system, because students who feel they belong and are understood and have the best chance of succeeding in the future.
