Casual teachers, also known as relief or supply teachers, are an important component of our teaching workforce across the state as they provide our schools with the ability to meet emerging workforce needs on a day-to-day basis, such the absence of a teacher.
For some teachers, working on a casual basis provides them with greater flexibility to meet their personal responsibilities, including the ability to nominate their availability on a week-to-week basis.
Casual and relief teaching fosters adaptability and resilience, as teachers learn to quickly adjust to new settings, classroom routines and diverse student populations. Working in multiple schools also allows casual teachers to build a wide professional network and these experiences can be valuable stepping stones to permanent or longer term temporary positions.
Casual teachers can be engaged by schools for a minimum of 2 hours to a maximum of 5 hours per day.

TRACER (Teacher Relief and Contract Employment Register)
The Teacher Relief and Contract Employment Register, also known as TRACER, is a service provided by the department to assist Queensland state schools to connect with and manage their casual and temporary teachers. This can be for individual days or temporary contracts up to one full term.
If you indicate a preference for teaching in a casual and/or temporary capacity on your
online application you will receive information about how to set up your TRACER profile and indicate your availability, once your application has been processed. More information is available on the department’s
supply teachers page.
If you have specific questions about casual teaching in our schools, you can email the TRACER team directly at
tracer@qed.qld.gov.au.

ClassCover: Queensland's new relief teacher booking platform
The Department of Education is introducing ClassCover, a modern, streamlined platform that simplifies how state schools connect with teachers about casual and relief teaching opportunities.
ClassCover has real-time availability updates to help schools find the right teacher quickly, providing greater visibility for both schools and teachers, and introduces a consistent, statewide approach to relief teacher management.
The new system enables schools and relief teachers to manage availability and bookings directly through a mobile app or web platform. It includes key features designed to help schools fill vacancies quickly and support relief teachers to manage their work more flexibly.
Key features include:
- multi-booking functionality
- live availability calendar view
- easy cancellation and rebooking.
ClassCover pilot
A pilot commenced with 53 Ipswich schools in Term 2, 2026. Learnings from the pilot are being used to inform the broader rollout across Queensland state schools.
Relief teachers who have registered to work at one or more of the participating pilot schools before Sunday 10 May 2026, were automatically included in the ClassCover pilot.
If you are not currently involved in the pilot and would like to work at one of these schools, please contact Support.ClassCover@qed.qld.gov.au.
Queensland rollout information
ClassCover is being rolled out to all Queensland state schools in phases.
- Wave 1: Metropolitan South, Metropolitan North, South East, North Coast and Darling Downs South West regions.
- Wave 2: Far North Queensland, North Queensland and Central Queensland regions.
During the rollout:
- schools included in each wave will use ClassCover for relief teacher bookings
- schools not yet included will continue using MyHR TRACER until their rollout begins
- some relief teachers working across regions may use both systems during the transition.
Once rollout is complete, ClassCover will become the department's system for managing relief teacher bookings across all Queensland state schools.
Relief teachers will be included in rollout waves based on the schools they have worked in since July 2025.
If a relief teacher believes they have been included in the wrong wave, please direct them to email support.classcover@qed.qld.gov.au.
What relief teachers can expect
To prepare for ClassCover, schools will be supported through a structured onboarding process, including:
- information sessions
- self-paced account activation
- ongoing access to resources and support ahead of go-live.
All communications for relief teachers will be sent via TRACER and published on the Teach Queensland website.
Information session and resources
Information session
Information sessions will provide an overview of ClassCover, including booking workflows and key features.
Details about information sessions, including how to register, will be shared when available.
Self-paced resources
A range of self-paced resources, including guides and support materials, is available via the ClassCover Help Centre.
Available resources include:
- Setting up a ClassCover profile.
- Activating a relief teacher profile with the Department of Education.
- Updating profile preferences.
- Quick guide for accepting, declining and cancelling bookings.
- Managing and maintaining profile details.
- Deactivating or deleting a ClassCover profile.
ClassCover app
ClassCover is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. A desktop version is also available.
The app is free for relief teachers and schools registered with the Queensland Department of Education.
Schools and relief teachers are welcome to download the app in preparation; however, profiles cannot be set up until account activation.
Existing ClassCover users
If you have an existing ClassCover account, you can log in using your current credentials when activating your Queensland Department of Education account.
If you work across multiple employers or regions (such as the New South Wales/Queensland border), your ClassCover calendar will consolidate bookings across all accounts. You do not need to switch between accounts, as ClassCover uses a single, unified profile that allows you to receive booking requests and notifications from all connected organisations simultaneously.
If you accept a booking outside ClassCover, you will need to manually mark yourself as unavailable to avoid receiving conflicting requests.
If you use both MyHR TRACER and ClassCover, you will also need to manage your availability across both systems. As the platforms operate independently, you must update your availability in each system to prevent double bookings.
