Casual teachers, also known as relief or supply teachers, are an important component of our teaching workforce across the state as they provide our schools with the ability to meet emerging workforce needs on a day-to-day basis, such the absence of a teacher.
For some teachers, working on a casual basis provides them with greater flexibility to meet their personal responsibilities, including the ability to nominate their availability on a week-to-week basis.
Casual and relief teaching fosters adaptability and resilience, as teachers learn to quickly adjust to new settings, classroom routines and diverse student populations. Working in multiple schools also allows casual teachers to build a wide professional network and these experiences can be valuable stepping stones to permanent or longer term temporary positions.
Casual teachers can be engaged by schools for a minimum of 2 hours to a maximum of 5 hours per day.

TRACER (Teacher Relief and Contract Employment Register)
The Teacher Relief and Contract Employment Register, also known as TRACER, is a service provided by the department to assist Queensland state schools to connect with and manage their casual and temporary teachers. This can be for individual days or temporary contracts up to one full term.
If you indicate a preference for teaching in a casual and/or temporary capacity on your
online application you will receive information about how to set up your TRACER profile and indicate your availability, once your application has been processed. More information is available on the department’s
supply teachers page.
If you have specific questions about casual teaching in our schools, you can email the TRACER team directly at
