Teaching as a career can offer you the chance to achieve a well-balanced life and the flexibility you need to juggle personal and professional needs.
Queensland state schools offer a range of employment options for teachers, including permanent, temporary, casual and part-time opportunities. This flexibility also enables each school to respond to their changing workforce, student and community needs across the year.
While flexible work opportunities often depend on the operational needs of your school, Queensland state schools are committed to fostering contemporary flexible working practices and supporting our staff to access relevant opportunities.
Teachers employed on temporary or part-time basis or undertaking casual teaching days are an important part of our workforce and provide the flexibility needed to respond to changing workforce needs and help support other teachers to access leave and professional development.
-
Temporary or contract teachers—are generally employed for at least five days up to a full school year, in a full or part-time capacity.
-
Casual teachers also known as relief or supply teachers, can be engaged for a minimum of 2 hours to a maximum of 5 hours per day, usually during the absence of a teacher. Teacher Relief and Contract Employment Register (TRACER)—is the service provided by the department to assist Queensland state schools to manage casual and temporary teachers and enables teachers to confirm their weekly availability for employment.
- Part-time teachers—are generally employed to work an agreed number of regular hours each week or fortnight and can be employed on a permanent or temporary basis. Teachers employed part-time can include those returning to work after family or extended leave, and work closely with colleagues and their supervisor regarding roles and responsibilities, and the days and times of attendance.
- Job share arrangements—allow 2 teachers to share the duties and responsibilities of a single teaching role. Through good planning and collaboration, time in classroom, lesson planning and assessment, and other responsibilities are divided between the teachers, reflective of the agreed job share arrangements.
-
Permanent state school teachers—can access the deferred salary scheme, which enables you to defer part of your annual salary over four years, and access the deferred amount to undertake a period of sabbatical leave during the fifth year. Access to and eligibility for approved sabbatical leave must be negotiated with principal.
State school teachers also have access to a range of
generous leave benefits that can also support personal and family needs, including carers leave and family leave.
