International teacher eligibility
If you have teaching qualifications and experience from outside of Australia and are current resident of another country, you are considered an international teacher. If you are a teacher in New Zealand, please refer to
NZ teacher eligibility if you have credentials from New Zealand.
Two key eligibility criteria are considered for employment of international teachers in Queensland state schools.
You are required to have or be eligible for:
-
teacher registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), this includes meeting qualification and English language proficiency requirements
- working rights in Australia. This means you have, or you are eligible to obtain an
Australian visa with work rights, if you're not already an Australian citizen or resident. Please note that we are not sponsoring visas at this time.
Additionally, you must meet the following requirements to submit an application for teacher employment:
- At least 2 years relevant work experience as a classroom/school teacher within the past 5 years.
- A valid skills assessment through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership.
- A
teaching qualification relevant to the roles you are seeking, which may include learning phase or curriculum area and year level specific (for example, secondary maths and chemistry or primary teaching).
We are unable to progress your application unless all of the above requirements have been met.
New Zealand teacher eligibility
As a beginning or experienced teacher from New Zealand, you must also meet teacher registration requirements, as well as have working rights in Australia, before you can be employed as a teacher in Queensland state schools.
This means:
Even after applying for registration with the QCT, you must also submit an application for employment via our
online application process.

Recognition of prior service
When you relocate to Queensland from overseas, you may be eligible to seek recognition of your prior teaching experience, enabling you to be considered for a higher starting
salary.
Your current qualifications and the knowledge and experience you’ve gained within and outside of the education sector can be considered as part of this assessment process. You’ll need to provide detailed information about your prior service, this may include statements of service from previous employers.
