Becoming registered as a teacher is one of the biggest milestones of your career.
Gaining teacher registration means you have met the professional standards for entry into teaching in Queensland and are eligible for employment in both our state and non-state schools. That’s worth celebrating!
Teacher registration is a mandatory requirement for all teachers working in any school in Queensland. Maintaining annual registration is also a condition of employment as a teacher.
The Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) is responsible for the registration of all Queensland teachers and is a separate authority to us. They manage the registration process including application, eligibility requirements and assessment criteria. Information about how to apply for teacher registration is available on the
QCT website.
Applying for teacher registration
Registration is a separate process to applying for employment with us and you will need to apply directly to the QCT to gain
registration.
Evidence of your teacher registration is required before you can commence employment as a permanent, temporary or casual teacher in any Queensland school.
You can apply for employment with us when you are in your final semester of your degree and prior to receiving your teacher registration. QCT can finalise your registration when your university or college confirms you have met all program requirements.
If you’re from interstate or overseas and are moving to Queensland, you can also apply for teacher employment while awaiting QCT registration.
Mutual recognition of teacher registration
If you hold teacher registration in another Australian state or territory, or New Zealand, you may be able to apply for registration under
mutual recognition arrangements. QCT can be contacted for more information.
Provisional teacher registration
Provisional registration may be granted by the QCT to beginning teachers, teachers from interstate and overseas, and teachers returning to teaching after a career break for an initial period of two years.
This type of registration recognises your professional knowledge, practice and engagement at the graduate level of the
Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and is intended to ensure you have a supported transition into the profession with a focus on professional learning and growth.
To be eligible for full registration, you must complete the QCT’s
transition to full registration process.
Permission to Teach
When a school or employer has been unsuccessful in finding a suitably qualified and registered teacher for a specific vacancy and location, the QCT may grant a
Permission to Teach (PTT) enabling the individual to teach within strict parameters.
PTT applications are considered on a case-by-case basis by the QCT and have specific requirements associated with them. The Department of Education can only apply for a PTT from the QCT when a vacancy has been advertised and a suitable registered teacher has not been identified.
The PTT is not a form of teacher registration or a type of teaching role and detailed information about Permission to Teach is available on the
QCT website.
Exemption from teacher registration
Some roles in Queensland state schools do not require you to be qualified as a teacher or have teacher registration, but will require you to obtain a
blue card (Queensland’s Working with Children Check).
You will need a blue card if you are employed in roles such as a:
- instrumental music instructor
- community teacher
- assistant teacher.
You do not need to obtain a blue card if you are currently registered with the QCT.
