Yvette’s story: Finding a home away from home
Yvette, a Deputy Principal at
Barkly Highway State School, arrived in Mount Isa as a single mum with her three-year-old daughter. Initially planning to stay for the minimum three years, this bustling community soon won her over.
‘Mount Isa does that to people—it draws you in. When I go back to the Sunshine Coast now, I say, “I’m going on holidays”… I can’t ever imagine moving back to the city or beach again,’ she shares.
Mount Isa thrives on connections, and Yvette found hers through sports and social events. A lifelong netball player, she expanded her horizons by taking on new challenges, including running in the Dust to Dawn marathon. She also joined touch football teams, meeting people who not only became friends but played significant roles in her life, even standing by her as a bridesmaid at her wedding.
Indeed, it’s the people of Mount Isa who have played a big part in Yvette’s decision to stay. It’s here that she met her partner, got married, and established a home where her daughter and stepson could thrive.
Career-wise, Mount Isa proved to be filled with opportunity. Starting as an early years teacher, Yvette quickly advanced into leadership positions, stepping into a Head of Department role after three years. Today, she’s a Deputy Principal, with a career trajectory that has grown faster than she imagined when she first set foot in Mount Isa.
Chris’ story: From temporary plan to lifelong adventure
When Chris accepted a teaching job in Mount Isa in 1997, he thought it would be a temporary stop. ‘I figured I’d do my three years and return to Brisbane,’ he says. But those three years turned into something much more.
‘Coming to Mount Isa was the making of me as a person,’ Chris reflects. He formed lifelong friendships, spent weekends camping and fishing in the Gulf, and met his wife. Raising two sons in Mount Isa deepened his connection to the community.
Professionally, Mount Isa has been just as rewarding. Chris progressed from teacher to Head of Department, Deputy, and eventually Head of Campus at
Spinifex State College. ‘I’ve been given opportunities here I wouldn’t have had elsewhere,’ he explains.
Now, as a teacher of students whose parents he once taught, Chris appreciates the unique connections that come with living and working in a close-knit town. ‘Mount Isa kids, like my two sons, deserve great teachers. Come for the work, stay for the adventure,’ he says.
