Industrial Technology and Design curriculum
Industrial Technology and Design (ITD) is a high demand secondary curriculum area, delivered across junior secondary and senior secondary subjects in Queensland state schools.
Commonly, these subjects incorporate theoretical knowledge with practical application and are taught in specific learning environments. Depending on the school, the applied ITD subjects offered may include core trade areas like
Furnishing,
Building and Construction,
Industrial Graphics,
Industrial Technology,
Engineering Skills and Materials and Technologies specialisations.
Note: This internship program doesn’t include subject areas in fields such as fashion, hospitality, and information and communication technology (ICT).
Hospitality/Food and Fashion curriculum
Hospitality/Food and Fashion is a curriculum area, delivered across junior secondary and senior secondary years in Queensland state schools.
Commonly, these subjects incorporate theoretical knowledge with practical application and are taught in specific learning environments. Depending on the school, the applied subjects offered may include Hospitality Practices, Food and Fashion, and Food Specialisations.
Note: This internship program doesn’t include the subject area of information and communication technology (ICT).
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this program you must:
- have Australian citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia
- have not previously commenced or completed an ITE program
- be able to commence an approved ITE program offered by one of our partner universities, on a full-time basis in first trimester/term of 2026.
You must also meet the relevant eligibility criteria below.
Industrial Technology and Design (ITD) stream:
- hold a Certificate III (or higher) in a relevant trade, with at least three years' industry experience
- be eligible for admission and to commence an undergraduate teaching degree (secondary), specialising in Industrial Technology and Design (ITD), at one of our partner universities:
Hospitality/Food and Fashion stream:
- hold a recognised qualification (Certificate III or higher) in Commercial Cookery, Hospitality or Apparel, Fashion and Textiles or similar, with at least three years’ industry experience, post apprenticeship/qualification.
- be eligible for admission and to commence an undergraduate teaching degree (secondary), specialising in Hospitality/Food and Fashion at our partner university:
In addition to the above requirements, successful applicants will be asked to confirm:
- their ability to commence full-time study in the relevant semester and across the first year of the program, in accordance with a pre-determined program map
- that they have the flexibility to complete a three-year internship in an eligible Queensland state secondary school, from the second year of the program
- their commitment to teach ITD/Hospitality in Queensland state schools after graduation, for the minimum service period (up to 4 years depending on school location). This permanent teaching position may not be in the same school as the internship and will be in a school with the greatest demand for ITD/Hospitality teachers, including rural or remote locations.
Preference will be given to those applicants who live or are willing to relocate to one of the department’s high priority locations in our Far North Queensland, North Queensland, Central Queensland or Darling Downs South West regions for their internship and their permanent teaching position.

You are encouraged to contact our partner universities directly to find out about eligibility requirements for the relevant degree/s. Universities will also assess any recognition of prior learning for your relevant industry experience.
Our partner universities also offer bridging courses and programs to help prepare you for tertiary study – it is strongly recommended that you complete these prior to being offered a place on the program. These programs include:

A scholarship of $20,000 (before tax) while you study the first year of a ITE program, specialising in ITD/Hospitality, and including completion of mandatory professional experience placements. |

School based internship years incorporating part-time teaching and study requirements

- Three-year paid teaching internship in a Queensland state school, with a reduced teaching load (50%, or 25 hours per fortnight) while you complete part-time studies and mandatory professional experience placements.
- Full-time salary and teacher benefits, including access to additional benefits for schools in rural and remote communities (TR 4–7).
- Mentoring and support from your university, T2T Program Team, and internship school.
- Access to a T2T Community of Practice.

Permanent employment as a teacher |
Commencement of employment as a teacher in a Queensland secondary state school (based on workforce need), following:
- successful completion of the T2T program and ITE degree
- gaining provisional registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.

Australian Taxation Office to determine any tax implications for current and future earnings, taxable income and/or benefits received.
Employment commitment
Following graduation and confirmation of eligibility for employment, program participants are required to commit to teaching in Queensland state schools for the minimum service period of up to 4 years, depending on the location of the school.
The minimum service period is 4 years for schools with a Transfer Rating (TR) 1 to 6, and 3 years for TR7 schools.
