Having worked in non-state schools for more than two decades, Peter was ready for a new challenge—a 'tree change' that would offer both professional growth and a richer way of life for him and his family.

'We wanted to explore some rural teaching opportunities,' he said. 'It was about trying something different and experiencing a new lifestyle.'

'Once I really started looking, I realised there were so many opportunities teaching in Queensland state schools and in rural, regional or remote communities,' Peter said.

After researching options and speaking with colleagues who had taken similar paths, the move west became a clear choice.

For Peter, working in a rural school community has meant broader responsibilities, opportunities to enhance leadership skills and progress his career, while making a meaningful impact in the community. These opportunities may have taken longer to access in non-state schools or a larger metropolitan setting.

Since joining St George State High School, Peter has had access to a significant range of professional development—both as a teacher and a leader.

The ability to build my skills and capacity has been tremendous. The access to learning and development in the last three years has been greater than what I had previously experienced,' he said.

'You're supported at every step of your journey. Every step is measured along the way to help you succeed.'

‘I also attended a state school, from Prep all the way through to Year 12, so I feel like I’ve come full circle coming back to teaching in a state school.'

'The biggest shift for me, coming to work in a state school, has been learning to work as a team; that you don't have to be an island,' said Peter.

'You actually have to really think about what's happening across the team as there's so much support around you and with that also comes the opportunities.'

His advice for teachers thinking about teaching in Queensland state schools is simple: start the conversation.

'Start the conversation, do some research online and explore the opportunities that exist for you if you do want to head to a rural, regional or remote community,' he said.

'For me, it was really easy—an email, then a phone call and from there the opportunities just kept coming.'
