Teach Queensland supports the department to attract talented teachers to our state’s public schools. We also promote a range of incentives and experiences that target high demand subject areas and priority locations.

Schools in Queensland

There are 3 types of schools in Queensland:

When you apply to teach with us, you’re applying to teach in Queensland’s state school system. If you are seeking employment in non-state schools in Queensland (independent and Catholic schools) you will need to apply directly to those schools or their employing authority.

Our structure

Queensland students starting their education in Prep or 'preparatory year' are five years old by 30 June in the year they start school. Students move to secondary school in Year 7 and complete their senior phase of learning in Year 12.

Selected schools in rural, remote, discrete Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, or other selected communities where there are barriers to accessing kindergarten, are prescribed to deliver kindergarten through the State Delivered Kindergarten program.

Our curriculum

The Australian Curriculum is taught in schools and is replacing the Queensland curriculum as it becomes available. Visit the Department of Education website for more information on what curriculum is currently being implemented.

State Delivered Kindergarten is delivered in accordance with the Queensland kindergarten learning guidelines. Find out more on the Early Childhood and Care website.

Our school types

Our schools offer a range of teaching experiences, from one teacher schools through to those with more than 2,000 students. You may find yourself teaching single or multi-age classes or teaching across a cluster of schools. All our state schools are coeducational and operate in close partnership with their local communities.

Queensland’s school year

The Queensland school year usually runs from late January to mid-December for 40 school weeks each year, with the rare exception of a 41-week year.

The school year is divided into 2 semesters, with 2 terms in each semester and vacation breaks for Easter, winter, spring and summer. View the Queensland state school holiday and term dates. Please note these may differ to independent or Catholic school terms.
