About the grant
If you are a preservice teacher nearing the completion of your teaching qualification, you could receive up to $5,000 to help juggle your work, study and home commitments while undertaking your final professional experience placement in a Queensland state school.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be:
Final placements that will be undertaken in a non-state or private school are not eligible for this grant.
If you’re an international student who currently resides in Australia and has permission under a Commonwealth Law to study in Australia, you are eligible to apply for this grant. Evidence of a valid visa and passport is to be submitted with the online application.
If you are participating in a permission-to-teach (PTT) with the Department of Education, you’re eligible to apply for this Grant providing the eligibility criteria (above) is met.
If your placement is in a kindy or long day care centre that is not a State Delivered Kindergarten, you could consider the
Early Childhood Practicum Placement Grant.
Financial support you can receive
This one-off grant will provide you with up to $5,000.
The grant will be provided to you as a lump sum within 6 weeks of submitting your completed application and documentation to initiate the payment.
A condition of receiving the grant is to notify the department of any changes to the approved placement particulars.
In addition, if you undertake your placement in a regional, rural or remote Queensland state school, you may also be eligible for an additional grant through the:
We recommend you seek financial advice regarding potential tax implications or impact on your current income and/or benefits received/to be paid. If you are an employee of the Department of Education during your placement, your grant will be taxed.
Use of the grant
You can use the grant to assist with placement-related expenses including:
- travel, meals, and accommodation expenses
- incidental costs, like teaching resources and stationery
Please keep receipts for placement-related expenses until the placement is completed.
How to apply
You will need to apply for this grant online. Your application will require you to respond to a short questionnaire and upload these supporting documents:
- Your current unofficial academic transcript.
- Confirmation of enrolment for your final semester of study.
- Eevidence of valid
blue card (working with children check).
- Confirmation of your placement from your higher education institution, (for example, InPlace or Sonia Online).

Processing times
We assess and process applications as they are received. Due to the large number of applications received each semester, it may take us up to 6 weeks to provide you with an update on your application for the grant.
Please check your email account regularly (including junk/spam folders) for emails that may include requests for further information to support your application, or to provide you with an offer for the grant.
Payment of the grant
If your application is successful, the grant will be provided to you as a lump sum following receipt of the required information such as bank details. Processing of the grant will occur as soon as possible, however, it may take up to 4 weeks for you to receive the grant.
We recommend you keep receipts for placement-related expenses, and seek financial advice regarding potential tax implications or impact on your income, tax, and/or benefits received/to be paid.
If you’re an employee of the Department of Education during your placement, the grant will be provided to you with your fortnightly pay and will be taxed.

No. You won't be eligible for this grant because you will be on an internship arrangement.
