About the grant
The Regional Professional Experience Grant supports preservice teachers to experience teaching, living and exploring regional cities and communities across Queensland.
The financial support provided by the grant, enables you to find out if teaching and living in a regional city or community is the right fit for you, while being supported to complete your professional experience placement in a Queensland state school.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this grant you must:
- be completing the third or fourth year of an undergraduate
initial teacher education (ITE) program, or a postgraduate ITE program
- be undertaking compulsory professional experience placement that is a minimum of 15 consecutive school days in duration
- be commencing a placement in a
Queensland state school that:
- has a transfer rating of TR2–TR3
- is at least 2 hours travel (each way) from your current home address to the state school, and
- is located in 1 of the following priority geographic regions:
- Central Queensland
- Darling Downs South West
- Far North Queensland
- North Queensland
- North Coast – only selected state schools in this region are eligible for this grant
- Metropolitan South – only selected state schools in this region are eligible for this grant.

If you undertake your placement in a non-state or private school, you are not eligible for this grant.
If you’re an international student who currently resides in Australia and has permission under a Commonwealth Law to study in Australia, you are eligible to apply for this grant.
If you are participating in a permission-to-teach (PTT) with the Department of Education, you’re eligible to apply for this Grant providing the eligibility criteria (above) is met.
Other professional experience support
If you undertake your placement in a Queensland state school within a rural or remote community, you may be eligible for our
Beyond the Range Professional Experience Grant.

Financial support you can receive
Successful applicants will receive a grant, reflective of the duration of their professional experience placement and the amount of time they will be spending in the eligible school and community.
Regional Professional Experience Grants:
15 to 19 consecutive school days

We recommend you seek financial advice regarding potential tax implications or impact on your current income and/or benefits. Current employees of the Department of Education will have their grant taxed as per the
ATO requirements.
You may be eligible for additional financial support through one of our other
Professional Experience Grants.
Use of the grant
You can use the grant to assist with personal and professional related expenses including:
- travel and rent expenses
- internet and phone bills
- teaching resources and stationery
- general living costs.
We recommend you keep receipts for your placement-related expenses and seek financial advice regarding any tax implications.
How to apply
To apply for our Regional Professional Experience Grant, you will need to submit your application and supporting documents via our online application process.
In addition to completing an online questionnaire, the following documents are required to be submitted:
- Confirmation of your professional experience placement school and dates.
- Confirmation of enrolment in an initial teacher education program.
- Current academic transcript.
- Previous professional experience placement reports.
- Valid blue card for working with children.
- Short resume/curriculum vitae.

Processing times
We assess and process applications as they are received. Due to the large number of applications received each semester, it may take us up to 6 weeks to provide you with an update on your application for the grant.
Please check your email account regularly – including junk/spam folders – for emails that may include requests for further information to support your application or to provide you with an offer for the grant.
Payment of the grant
If your application is successful, the grant will be provided to you as lump sum following receipt of the required information such as bank details. Payment of the grant will occur as soon as possible, however, it may take up to 4 weeks for you to receive the grant.
We recommend you keep receipts for placement-related expenses and seek financial advice regarding potential tax implications or impact on your income, tax, and/or benefits received/to be paid.
If you’re an employee of the Department of Education during your placement, the grant will be provided to you with your fortnightly pay and will be taxed.
A condition of payment is to
notify the Department of any changes to the approved placement particulars.
