About the program

The Turn to Teaching Internship Program (TTT Program) supports degree qualified professionals to transition to a teaching career and secure permanent employment in Queensland state schools.

This two-year employment-based pathway offers the opportunity to complete a postgraduate ITE program in conjunction with a paid teaching internship in a Queensland state school.

The program includes:

  • a $20,000 scholarship during your first year of full-time ITE studies
  • an internship year in a Queensland state school, on a full-time salary with a 50% teaching load, while completing the second year of your studies part-time
  • support of a supervising and mentor teacher, and access to other support mechanisms during your internship
  • permanent employment as a teacher in a Queensland state school after you successfully complete your internship and graduate.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this program you must:

  • have an undergraduate degree in a field other than education/teaching (minimum 3-year Bachelor degree)
  • have not previously commenced or completed an ITE program, unless you meet one of the previous studies in education/teaching criteria
  • have Australian citizenship or permanent residency status in Australia
  • meet the admission requirements for one of the eligible postgraduate ITE programs offered by our university partners, and be accepted for enrolment
  • be able to commence an approved ITE program offered by our partner universities, on a full-time basis in the relevant semester/trimester and year.

Please note that applications from individuals who are able and committed to teach in a high demand subject area will be prioritised when the number of applications exceeds the number of places. Current high demand curriculum areas include English, mathematics, science, technologies, or one of these high demand subjects within a special education setting. These areas are subject to change, depending on the department's workforce needs.

Applicants who can complete their internship and commit to a permanent teaching position upon completion of the TTT Program for 2-3 years, in a priority region of Queensland will also be prioritised during the selection process. Priority regions currently include Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North Queensland or North Queensland.

In addition to the above requirements, successful applicants will be asked to confirm their:

  • ability to commence full-time study in the relevant semester and across the first year of the program, in accordance with a pre-determined program map
  • flexibility to complete a one-year internship in an eligible Queensland state school, in the second year of the program
  • willingness to undertake an internship placement at a state school located in a priority region of Queensland (Central Queensland, Darling Downs-South West, Far North Queensland or North Queensland)
  • commitment to permanent teaching employment in Queensland state schools in a priority region upon completion of the program, for a minimum service period of 2-3 years.

Previous studies in education/teaching

Individuals that have previously commenced but not completed an ITE program may apply for this program if they:

  • are not eligible for recognition of prior learning undertaken as part of an ITE program (this usually applies to studies commenced 10 or more years prior); or
  • have recently completed a maximum of 2 courses of a Master of Teaching with a partner university and are eligible to continue enrolment or qualify for re-enrolment in the relevant semester/trimester. Please note that a current academic transcript must be included in your application.
