Trade to Teach Internship Program

The Trade to Teach Internship Program:

  • provides a supported pathway for skilled and industry-experienced tradespeople to transition to a rewarding career in teaching
  • builds the supply of Industrial Technology and Design (ITD)​ teachers in our Queensland state schools, where they are needed most, so that our students have the opportunity to learn foundational trade skills and open up employment pathways for their future.

If you hold a trade qualification and want to pursue a teaching career in ITD, the Trade to Teach Internship Program can help by providing:

  • financial support while you study full-time
  • a paid internship teaching position with support in the classroom to enable you to gain professional experience
  • a permanent teaching position following graduation.

The Trade to Teach Internship Program is also an action under the Good people. Good jobs: Queensland Workforce Strategy 2022–2032, the Queensland Government whole-of-government strategy to strengthen Queensland's workforce.

ITD curriculum

The ITD curriculum is offered in junior and senior secondary settings, incorporating theoretical knowledge with practical application in a range of learning environments that can include computer applications, workshops and practical workspaces. The specific applied ITD subjects offered in each school can vary and includes Furnishing, Building and Construction, Industrial Graphics, Industrial Technology, Engineering Skills, and Materials and Technologies specialisations.

The Trade to Teach Internship Program does not focus on fashion, hospitality and information and communication technology (ICT).

Program inclusions

Successful applicants commencing in 2025 receive:

  • Year 1—scholarship and full-time study (2025)
    • a $20,000 scholarship to assist with study expenses during the first year of full-time undergraduate teaching degree (specialising in ITD) – taxed and paid in 4 x $5,000 instalments
  • Years 2–4—internship and full-time study (2026–28)
    • a paid internship from the second year of study and for the remainder of the degree, with a fortnightly salary starting at $2,842^ (less tax and other deductions)
    • a reduced teaching load (25 hours a fortnight) in a Queensland state school to support the completion of your qualification and professional development. The teaching qualification must be completed in a maximum of 4 years
    • mentoring, support and access to a community of practice with other Trade to Teach participants
  • Year 5—permanent teaching position (2029)
    • an offer of permanent employment as a teacher in a secondary Queensland state school following graduation and provisional registration with the Queensland College of Teachers.

^All payments are taxed as they are earned are earned (you will be taxed on a lump sum of $5,000 in the fortnight it is paid. Tax on $5,000 is not averaged as earnings across the quarter). Please be advised that this will impact the take home pay in the fortnight which it is paid and will include additional contributions to tax e.g. HECS/HELP as it will meet the HECS/HELP threshold. It is recommended that recipients obtain financial advice from a financial advisor, Centrelink and/or the Australian Taxation Office for any implications this may have on current and future earnings, taxable income or benefits received.

Suitable applicants

We are seeking aspiring teachers with a trade qualification and at least three years' industry experience.

You may be working as a tradesperson and considering a career and lifestyle change. You may already be working in the education sector and you want to move into a teaching role. You can choose a rewarding career where you get to share your passion and expertise, as well as encourage and inspire young people.

To be eligible for the Trade to Teach Internship Program commencing in 2025, you must:

  • hold a relevant trade qualification (Certificate III or higher)
  • have not commenced an undergraduate teaching degree
  • be eligible for enrolment into the undergraduate teaching degree (secondary) in Semester/Trimester 1, 2025, specialising in Industrial Technology and Design (ITD) at one of the partner universities:
  • be willing to undertake an internship in any Queensland state secondary school. The specific school will be determined in consultation with the intern and local HR teams
  • demonstrate commitment to teach in any Queensland state school in the ITD subject area for a minimum service period (3–4 years depending on location) after graduation. This permanent teaching position may not be in the same school as the internship and may be in a school with the greatest demand for ITD teachers (potentially rural or remote locations)
  • be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia.

Applicants will need to meet minimum entry requirements for the degree. We encourage you to connect with our partner universities about their entry requirements and enrolment processes. Universities also offer bridging courses and programs to prepare people for tertiary study. It is highly recommended that applicants  consider these programs at the same time as applying for the program.

It is also a requirement that you have a minimum of three years industry  experience (post trade qualification) to bring real life learning to the classroom. This experience may also provide you with an opportunity for recognition of prior learning, which would be assessed by the university upon enrolment and may reduce your study load.
